What does it mean to “ask Jesus into your heart ”?
Asking Jesus into your heart” is a common phrase in Christian circles. It is frequently used in evangelistic conversations, from street evangelism to children’s ministry. Although common, the phrase or concept is not found in Scripture. Romans 3:20 is referenced as biblical support, but unfortunately this text is taken out of context.
People may use the term figuratively to describe the process of being “saved” or “being born again.” But the instruction to “ask Jesus into your heart” is presenting a “different gospel” as Paul talks about in 2 Corinthians 11. And sadly, this phrase, used by well being people, may be inadvertently leading those who believe to trust in something that will send them to hell.
The best way of referring to salvation is to use the same terms as the Bible uses. The gospel is not complex. We should not be tempted to add or remove anything from the pure simple gospel presented in God’s Word.
A better term use to describe salvation would be to be “born again.” To be born again requires that a person submits them-self to the authority of God that is found in His Word, repents of their sin against a Holy God and places their faith in the salvation offered through Jesus Christ. The Bible says, “For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved” … “And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved’” (Romans 10:10, Acts 2:21 ESV). God graciously forgives sinners and will not turn any truly repentant heart away that calls out to Him.
