Question

How are angels described in the Bible?

Answer

Angels are created spiritual beings who serve God and carry out His purposes (Psalm 103:20–21; Hebrews 1:14). The Bible sometimes records angels appearing in a human-like form, often in a way that initially does not draw attention to their identity (Genesis 18:1–2; Luke 24:4).

Other biblical visions are striking and unfamiliar. Isaiah saw seraphim with six wings around God’s throne (Isaiah 6:2–3). Ezekiel’s vision includes living creatures with wings and features that communicate God’s glory and holiness (Ezekiel 1). Revelation describes angels in radiant, powerful imagery. These visions are not meant to make us fixate on angels, but to show the greatness of the God they worship.

Popular pictures of angels as harmless, winged babies do not come from Scripture. When angels appear, people are often afraid, and angels commonly say, “Do not be afraid.” Yet Scripture consistently directs worship to God alone. Angels themselves refuse worship and point people back to Him (Revelation 22:8–9).

Key Scriptures: Psalm 103:20–21; Isaiah 6:2–3; Hebrews 1:14; Revelation 22:8–9.
